Price is only the surface. Underneath every candle is a flow of leverage, positioning and forced selling that often explains why the move happened. Traders who follow “smart money” are really following that flow. This article breaks down the three signals that matter most — liquidations, open interest and funding — and how they fit together.
When a leveraged trade moves against a trader far enough, the exchange force-closes it. In a crowded market, one liquidation triggers the next, and you get a cascade: price accelerates, more positions blow up, and the move overshoots. Watching liquidations in real time tells you when the market is capitulating versus merely drifting. A cluster of long liquidations into a fast drop is very different from a quiet, orderly pullback.
Open Interest (OI) is the total value of outstanding derivative positions. Read it alongside price:
OI does not predict direction on its own, but it tells you whether a move is backed by fresh positioning or just noise.
On perpetual futures, funding is the periodic payment between longs and shorts that keeps the contract tied to spot. Strongly positive funding means longs are crowded and paying to stay in — a market that can be vulnerable to a flush. Strongly negative funding means shorts are crowded — the setup for a short squeeze. Extreme funding is a caution flag, not a signal to act.
Crypto Flow shows live liquidations, OI flow, funding and whale positioning on one screen.
Start free →Individually, each signal is noisy. Together they form context. For example: funding deeply negative (shorts crowded), OI rising while price grinds sideways (shorts adding), and large wallets quietly net long — that is the kind of confluence where a squeeze becomes more likely. The value is in the agreement of signals, not any single number.
None of this is a guarantee. Markets are reflexive and the crowd’s positioning changes minute to minute. Reading flow improves your situational awareness; it does not remove risk. Size your positions for the scenario where you are wrong, and never trade money you cannot afford to lose.
Crypto Flow was built to make this flow legible: live liquidation alerts, open-interest movement, funding extremes, whale positions and a plain-language read of the whole market — updated every few seconds. It is an information tool to help you watch clearly, not a signal service that tells you what to buy.
